8th Materials Webinar

New Cements to Mitigate the Climatic Change

The cement industry is a significant carbon dioxide emitter mainly due to the calcination process and combustion of fuels. Therefore, the use of ternary cements, among other type of low-carbon cements, is being promoted to achieve the target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions to 50–55% below 1990 levels by 2030 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, according to most of the proposed cement industry roadmaps for moving to a low carbon economy in 2050.

This webinar aims to analyse the state of the art of the low-carbon cements as a key factor in achieving robust and reliable levers to achieve the expected net-zero carbon emissions. As a result of this aim, experts in the field will participate on this webinar. To contribute to this field, the widespread production and use of low-carbon cements urgently requires skilled multidisciplinary architects and engineers who can implement and use the next generation of sustainable cements with enhanced durability, reducing environmental impact and costs.

Chair

Technical University of Madrid, Spain

Introduction
Bio
Dr. Miguel Ángel Sanjuán graduated in Chemistry in 1987 at the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain. In 1988, he joined Técnicas Reunidas where he worked successfully in as Chemical Process Engineer. In 1992, he obtained his PhD in Industrial Chemistry from the Complutense University defending a Thesis developed in the “Eduardo Torroja” Institute of Construction Sciences on corrosion of concrete steel reinforcement. Between 1993 and 1995 he was an Academic Visitor (Marie Curie Fellow) at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, UK. His involvement in the cement industry began in 1997, as he started working for the Cement and Mortars Area of the Spanish Institute of Cement and its Applications (IECA). Since 2001 to 2013, he was the Technical Director of the IECA’s Industrial department in charge of the certification of more than 200 cements. He was involved in several projects related to the use of additions in cements. Currently, Dr Miguel Ángel Sanjuán is the Head of the Cement and Mortars Area of the Spanish Institute of Cement and its Applications (IECA) and is an Associate Professor at Polytechnic University of Madrid since 2009. He is the Secretary of the Spanish Standardization Technical Committee AEN/CTN-80 “Cements and lime for construction” and Convenor of the European Standardization Technical Committee CEN/TC51/WG14 “Hydraulic Road Binders”.
